Exciting yet predictable, ‘Beast’ is fun and easy to tame | movie reviews

Before all those streaming services and Pay Per View and a million satellite dish provider channels, we had the movie of the week. There were only a handful of channels and every week they showed a made-for-TV movie that you weren’t going to see in the cinema. Yes, they were on a lower budget and only lasted 90 minutes, but they got the job done.

That’s exactly what “Beast” is in the best possible way, except it’s been released theatrically. The new action-thriller starring Idris Elba as a man taking on a rogue lion in the South African bush sets up a great premise that holds up most of the time. The movie isn’t trying to be a $150 million comic book adaptation or the next Fast and Furious installment, and that’s great.
