AAs Dhanush fans eagerly awaited Maari’s second arrival, director Balaji Mohan made him a mass performer for audiences. The film progressing with action, romance and comedy in the alluring presence of Dhanush, Sai Pallavi and Tovino Thomas will keep audiences entertained until the end.
Maari 2 kicks off with the entry of Beeja, the main antagonist played by Tovino Thomas. The director tried to create an impressive villain through the long curly hair, false teeth and tattoos. Even when the villain continues to say he is the god of death, he turns out to be a cliché despite the odd costume. The plot centers on the villain’s revenge on Maari who destroyed his life.
Like the usual gangster movies, the plot revolves around the war on drugs. The film has a captivating first half that will thrill audiences with Maari’s entry with slow-motion stunt sequences, hard-hitting action and dialogue. Sai Pallavi and Krishna played two important new characters in the film. While the love for pigeons showed Maari’s softer side in the first part, here the romance with Anandhi (Sai Pallavi) serves the same. Kalai (Krishna) is Maari’s best friend.
Compared to the first half which unfolds with a lot of twists and turns and suspense, the second half is a bit slow. However, the director managed to keep audiences on the edge of their seats without dragging the story out. Sai Pallavi went beyond the stereotypical heroine to impose herself. Anandhi is just as important in the plot as Maari. The chemistry between them makes the film more beautiful.
Tovino put on a decent performance on his Tamil debut. Varalaxmi Sarathkumar and Krishna played important roles. Apart from the stylish choreography, Yuvan Shankar Raja’s songs do not touch the heart. But, the excellent bottom score certainly contributed to the sensation. Maari made a powerful comeback with all the necessary ingredients for a mass artist. The film is far superior to the first part which was weakened by a predictable plot and cliché scenes. “Maari 2” will never disappoint fans who yearn for a mass Dhanush movie.
